For more than four decades, it has been hard to imagine the BMW motorbike programme without GS models. This model series was first honed for sport. But BMW’s off-road history is much older than the GS range. BMW developed its off-road competition expertise over decades, right up to its great successes in the Dakar Rally. This book sheds light on BMW’s off-road sport and rally history. Not only do many contemporary witnesses have their say, but the extensive technical development of the competition machines (including the sidecars), including all years of competition, is illustrated in words and pictures in more detail than ever before. Much of the information and pictures are published here for the first time. The work on this book took seven years, as on the one hand there were always unforeseen obstacles to overcome, and on the other hand new material, facts and contacts kept emerging.
