In some engines, BMW has protected the diode plate from excessive vibrations using rubber elements.

Over time, these become porous, and the diode plate can come loose, causing it to lose ground contact.

It is always recommended to replace all four buffers, as experience shows that they all eventually become porous due to engine temperature.
