About the machine:
This machine is a special piece with an interesting history and fine components. In 1979, the BMW was rebuilt by the owner with great sensitivity and expertise. It was intended to take part in reliability races. For this purpose, the machine was dismantled immediately after purchase and then – after optimization of the individual assemblies – reassembled. For example, the channels were polished, the oil cooling optimized and the carburettors overhauled. The chassis was also optimized. Rear shock absorbers with air bags were fitted. Unimaginably expensive at the time, they unfortunately had to be replaced due to leaks.

Another highlight of the racing scene at the time was chassis optimization by fitting MKC film capacitors to selected assemblies. At the time, opinions were divided on this. Some called it humbug, others a true miracle cure. The owner of this machine experimented in this once new field; he was also well known in the racing scene. Many of the components are identical to those used by Helmut Dähne when building his racing machine for the Isle of Man.

An early, serious illness prevented the owner from taking part in the race. The bike was therefore stored professionally without having taken part in a race and was warmed up and stored again once a year by a neighbor on the adjacent country lanes. After the owner’s death, the widow continued this ritual. In this way, damage to the stand was professionally avoided. After removing the corrosion-protecting waxes and oils, the Scherb shines again in an attractive condition.

A beautiful, technically sophisticated contemporary conversion, the likes of which are rarely seen.
